The progress being made in research and the application of materials and structures on a nanometric level is currently having an enormous and increasing impact on scientific and social progress. The confluence of different scientific advances, such as the synthesis and deposit of nano-structural materials, the use of new characterisation techniques and applications of nano-particles and carbon nano-tubes, as well as the development of nano-sensors and the progress being made in the understanding and prediction of complex systems have all led to the emergence of nanoscience, which is used to implement important transformations in many areas of life such as biomedicine research, biotechnological applications, new materials, etc.
