Soon it will have been 30 years since the outbreak of HIV-AIDS, a global pandemic for which there is still no cure, and for which we can only prevent its transmission. While AIDS continues to be one of the main health problems in the developed world, it is in sub-Saharan Africa that its long-term catastrophic dimensions represent a more serious threat to public health, collective welfare and human development. In this lecture, the speaker will be summarising the first three decades of the fight against AIDS, as well as highlighting some of the most crucial issues and debates in the sphere of global health with respect to tackling the pandemic.
