The experience described in the work of Nobel prize-winner Ivo Andric and in that of the anthropologist Jovan Cvijic represents the guiding thread for this lecture, which examines the heterogeneous nature of the South Slavic peoples, whose complex history resulted in the recent ethnic war. The past points to the future (this is the thinking that is interwoven into all of Andric's narrative), while Cvijic, in his geomorphological research, claims that there are different psychological types in this part of the Balkans, and that their nature permeates the historical fate of this part of Europe.
