Biodiversity has been a buzzword for some time now, and this is because the rate at which species are dying out has increased prodigiously in recent years; a rate that is much higher than would be expected if it were only the result of the forces of nature. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the UN has declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB). As a result, during the course of 2010, numerous initiatives will be organised to spread information, promote the protection of biological diversity and encourage organisations, institutions, businesses and the general public to take direct measures to reduce the constant loss of biological diversity around the world. The various lectures in the series «Biodiversity. From the museum to nature» represent part of this initiative.
