Chemistry and the main social challenges in Horizon 2020

Chemistry, a science that was essentially developed in Europe and which is the basis for one of the largest industrial sectors in the European Union, has a central role in solving virtually all the main challenges for our society that have been identified by the programme Horizon 2020. These include: a) Health, demographic change and well-being; b) Food safety, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research, and bioeconomy; c) Safe, clean, efficient energy; d) ‘Green’, integrated, intelligent transport; e) Actions on the climate, the efficient use of resources and raw materials, and  f) Inclusive, innovative, safe societies. However, taking part in the task of solving large-scale problems also serves to highlight other needs that must be met (i.e. training, truly pluridisciplinary employment).
