Exploring the diversity of the invisible?
In this lecture, the speaker will provide a brief summary of the history of marine microbial ecology, highlighting the importance of microorganisms in terms of biomass, participation in the flows of elements and diversity. The speaker will also be presenting the project International Census of Marine Microbes and some of its results, such as those concerning the Mediterranean and the Antarctic. This project has enabled scientists to define and explore the «biosphere of extremely rare microorganisms» with much greater precision.

Cycle: Series of lectures to commemorate the International Year of Biodiversity

Organized by: Residencia d'Investigadors, CSIC UPF, Institut de Biologia Evolutiva, 2010 Any Internacional de la Diversitat Biològica
