This new series of meetings on "Science and ageing", organised by the Residence for Researchers CSIC – Generalitat of Catalonia and FATEC, focuses on the dynamic of change that is taking place in our society that increasingly involves reflecting on subjects which, no matter how complex they might be, require knowledge and reflection. That is why, in fact, this series of lectures has been structured around the insignia of I+D+I: research, development and innovation are of key importance for social transformation from within society itself. "From the right to the duty of dignified life and death” is a response to this parameter: discovering and reflecting with the aim of obtaining data and tools that will allow us to tackle this extremely delicate subject in a more intelligent and effective manner. Generally speaking, "death with dignity" has been presented as an individual right and, in light of this, we should add that perhaps in addition to a right, it should be also considered a duty of a society that looks after its individual members to the point of ensuring their dignity even at that momentous point in their lives: dignified death thus becomes a vital indicator of a society that is fully democratic, in that the person is the centre of priority care.
