Harmful algal blooms are a natural phenomenon that produces problems for health (especially food poisoning) and for the well-being of humans (fishing, tourism, leisure) and of aquatic ecosystems. Certain anthropic pressures and global warming may increase their frequency and/or their negative impacts. Multidisciplinary scientific research, co-ordinated with political and socio-economic agents, can produce tools to mitigate their effects. As well as an overview, the speaker will be presenting examples of harmful blooms on the Catalan coast.
