In the words of Alain Touraine, US universities continue to be the envy of the world. The speaker will explain the different factors that define these universities, their characteristics and changing aspects. Specifically, he will examine five processes: expansion and privatisation; the problem of diversity; an analysis of inequality; decentralisation; and the challenge of quality. The lecture will end with a comparison with the recent Wert Report on the reform of Spanish universities, which includes several American characteristics
