One of the basic concepts in Evolutionary Biology is that of adaptation through natural selection. Understanding this concept has very different applications in different fields, such as in the treatment of disease, environmental conservation and agriculture. The use of model organisms (for example, the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster) enables us to identify the genes, the molecular mechanisms and the characters that are most important in the adaptation of organisms to the environment.
