Marine production in coastal areas is conditioned by nutrient input on land. In natural systems, the input of land nutrients is often linked with major energy phenomena, such as storms. The regulation of river flows and the use of freshwater liberates nutrient input from energy and determines the type of plankton found in coastal areas.
