The celebration of the International Year of Light in 2015 is an excellent opportunity to discover the ways in which light science and technologies (which define what is known as photonics) influence our everyday lives. Photonics has become a transversal science in which light forges new tools that help us to solve problems and overcome limitations in many different fields, from quantum physics to medicine, as well as in new technologies. Nano-photonics is a branch of photonics that studies the interaction between light and tiny quantities of matter, on the nanometric scale. In this lecture the speaker will be presenting some of the extraordinary optical properties of gold nano-particles, and we will be discovering their applications, focusing particularly on how they can provide medicine with new tools.
