Developed societies use around 200,000 synthetic substances in a multitude of different industrial, domestic and agricultural applications. These substances include pesticides, medicines, igniferous substances in consumer products, and many others. Furthermore, there are the emissions of hydrocarbons and particles as a result of our use of fossil fuels. Thousands of organic pollutants have been found throughout the planet, and scientists are now beginning to understand how they might affect the ecosystems, in addition to their interactions with other vectors of global change. In this lecture, the speaker will attempt to provide an overall view of both the importance of organic pollutants as a vector of environmental change in recent decades, and of the knowledge we currently possess of them.
