The European Commission has identified photonics as being one of the seven Key Enabling Technologies (or KETs) for the industrial future of the European Union. A recent study carried out by the Commission concluded that around 10% of the European economy — from the telecommunications that make the Internet possible to lighting systems and all kinds of industrial processes — are linked in some way to photonics. In this lecture, the speaker will be looking at some of these sectors and discussing some of the important new breakthroughs being made in emerging industrial areas.
