A country’s competitiveness can be defined as its capacity to develop and export products and services in a sustainable and creative manner, at the same time as to make available funding to ensure the acquisition of imports with the aim of guaranteeing the balance between the two aspects, and with beneficial results. In this process, scientific research is of key importance, as it represents the first link in the chain. Thus, this lecture will begin by examining some of the challenges faced by science and technology during the course of the 20th century, after which the speaker will go on to focus on the challenges that continue to exist, or those that have been reshaped and emerged as new ones in the 21st century. This examination will serve as the basis to reflect on the close links between researching, developing and innovating, a reflection that will be illustrated with several successful examples that have been developed at and by CSIC, and which have included such aspects as the process of knowledge generation, discovering the why and the how, and the progress that the application of this knowledge represents for a specific problem.
