Biomedical research has become an area of study and work that, with the passing of time, has become established as one of the main axes of the R+D system owing to the impact it has on our lives. In this respect, the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona of CSIC (IIBB – an organisation associated with IDIBAPS) currently represents one of the most outstanding examples in terms of the growing interest in carrying out research of a translational nature; that is, that basic research should be aimed at the study of important diseases and illnesses, and that it should provide knowledge to help improve people’s health. In this regard, the IIBB has already made significant contributions in areas such as psychiatric, neurological and hepatic disease, and in pathologies in which inflammation processes and cell death play a crucial role. The aim of this series of lectures is to present and explain to the general public some of the research projects currently being carried out by the IIBB, and which are having a great impact on the study, prevention and cure of these diseases.
