Searching for a new Earth

Are there other living beings in the universe? How long will we take to find other planets like ours? How will we know if they are inhabited? These are questions that are sure to interest everyone. What is most encouraging is that science is only a few steps away from being able to answer these questions. At present, we know of some 2,000 planets orbiting other stars, and nature has revealed to us a wealth of planetary systems that we never could have imagined. This has all been possible thanks to the development of new techniques for measuring the velocity, brightness and position of stars with exquisite precision. In this lecture, the speaker will provide an overview of the methods that can help us discover exoplanets, as well as commenting on some of the latest, most spectacular discoveries. He will also present space missions and projects (and especially those that have included the participation of the Institute of Space Science) that will enable us to continue this great scientific revolution, and to ultimately discover planets similar to our Earth.
