Since it was created 75 years ago, CSIC has worked tirelessly to promote scientific and technological development, and has now become Spain’s main public research organisation, as well as being the third most important in Europe and the seventh at the global level. Responsible for 20% of Spain’s total scientific production, CSIC currently comprises 123 research institutes, distributed through all the Autonomous Communities, employing some 12,000 people. Specifically in Catalonia (for which a Delegation was created more than 70 years ago), CSIC has 24 research centres and some 2,500 employees.
Based on the firm conviction that the research carried out in the CSIC centres in Catalonia must be brought to the attention of the general public, CSIC and the Residence for Researchers have organised a new lecture season: “Science today for a better tomorrow”, a season which, in conjunction with the lecture programme organised by the Agency for the Research Centres of Catalonia (CERCA), means that by the end of the academic year 2014-2015, the Residence for Researchers will have hosted more than 50 scientific lectures. In this way, the Residence for Researchers remains true to its initial commitment to become a centre for promoting science, and which is why, in 2014, the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation awarded the Residence for Researchers the National Prize for Scientific Communication.
The season of lectures “Science today for a better tomorrow” has been devised – in this, the 75th anniversary of CSIC – with the aim of informing the general public of the results about some of the latest research projects (and particularly those with the greatest social importance) that have been carried out in Catalonia’s CSIC centres. These are research projects with the objective of not only advancing scientific knowledge but also, and above all, of helping to discover the causes and implications of certain aspects that have a particular bearing on our lives.
