Spatial statistics is an application of the general statistics that deal with the analysis of geographical data. It was in the 1960s and 70s that statistics burst into the world of social sciences. In geography, the application of statistical methods led to what became known as the quantitative revolution. In sociology, history and, of course, economics, significant advances also took place thanks to the processing of data, encouraged by the use of computerised tools unknown until that time. The statistical processing of data in these fields of knowledge made it possible to empirically verify old theoretical models, as well as enabling the creation of new approaches. Statistics applied to spatial data – or (and it's the same thing) the study of variables located in space – changed its paradigm with the advent of geographical information systems in the 1980s.
