The astrophysics of high energies reveals the highest-energy phenomena in the universe, such as the stellar explosions known as supernovas, which encapsulate most of the chemical elements that make up the Earth and its living creatures: we are made of stardust. X-ray and gamma ray studies on the cosmos are carried out using instruments mounted on satellites (given that these rays become absorbed by the Earth’s atmosphere), and they show us a universe that is very different to the one we can see using Earth-based telescopes. We will be taking a look at some of these satellites, past and future, while placing particular emphasis on the ones that have involved significant participation by the Institute of Space Science, in addition to the main scientific results they produced.
