In spite of its official declaration of neutrality, Spain could not remain uninvolved in a war which ended up spilling over onto its territory. In this respect, what happened in Barcelona between 1914 and 1918 highlights this reality by demonstrating both the links that Spain and Spaniards had with the war, and its profound impact on a society that has traditionally been in a state of turmoil.
