This series of lectures, which focus on Central and Eastern Europe, takes an interdisciplinary view of the current situation of countries such as Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and those that used to comprise Yugoslavia. Most of these countries – which are now either members of the European Union or candidates for membership – once believed (as many other countries did) that the fall of communism and the resulting transition to a democratic state and a global market economy would create a welfare state and a certain degree of stability. However, in many cases, these expectations have not been met. In these lectures, researchers from home and abroad specialising in the fields of anthropology, journalism, literature and history will be attempting to clarify this situation.
