The concept of the African border has meant that sub-Saharan societies have been historically constituted within an exchange space in which cultural differences act as a motor for social creation, but also from an Africanising perspective. The ‘Africanising’ factor has often been interpreted as a "traditionalist" cultural check to development, but this lecture will attempt to explore the future possibilities that African border traditions have opened up, and are continuing to open up with globalisation.
