Science and the EU countries are facing a massive challenge: how to design new R&D strategies for 2014-2020, the period for which Europe has declared the objective of not only bringing about new social achievements, but also of ensuring that R&D+i plays a crucial role in the process of building a continent that is more sustainable and where well-being and progress become a true benchmark. This importance being given to R&D+i takes the specific form of Research Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3), one of the main objectives of which is that the transfer of knowledge between basic and applied research should be much more active, so that it generates new competitive possibilities based on defining the specialisations of countries and locations in specific areas of activity, by facilitating the internalisation of the productive model, which is increasingly based on R&D+i, talent, patents, and the effective transmission of knowledge to the business world.
The Residence for Researchers aims to contribute as much as possible to this challenge by hosting a new group of lectures in the series "Challenges of the 21st century" that will focus on the close interrelationship between "discovering, innovating and progressing", and which represents a key factor in the process of building a knowledge society that can facilitate basic new advances in citizens’ welfare, as well as introducing policies that are more sustainable, collaborative and fair.
