Using the interaction between radiation and matter to research almost everything: nano-materials, exotic minerals, art works, corpses, etc.

One common denominator of scientific research into such different disciplines as the science of matter, geology and fine arts is the use of analytical skills and techniques. Many of these techniques use radiation (lasers, x-rays, UV, etc.) to obtain important information on the samples studied. In this lecture, and to celebrate the fact that the UN has declared 2015 to be the International Year of Light, the speaker will be presenting real-life examples to examine different analytical techniques based on the interaction between light and matter, including optical absorption, Raman Spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction.
