What impact has human activity had on the Earth’s climate?

Man has managed to develop methods of energy consumption that are far beyond those of any other natural organism. These methods have produced a significant rise in the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, producing highly unusual concentrations of same within the Quaternary period. There is a 95% probability that average temperatures in recent years have been higher than the averages observed over the past 2,000 years. This carbon dioxide increase (which currently stands at 0.6ºC) has led to widespread ice and snow melt in the mountains, as well as in parts of the North and South Pole. Owing to this ongoing melting and the rising temperature of water masses, the sea level rose by 17 cm in the 20th century. In this lecture, the speaker will show the main aspects of the change currently taking place, and will also present the data and information sources supporting the observations. The presentation will be structured around three questions: what is happening, why it is happening and why it is happening now.
