Published for the "Christmas popular imagines: the Caganer" exposition, organized by the Residence for Researchers and "Caganer Friends Association, held at Christmas, 1999, at the Residence for Researchers Auditorium.
The "caganer" is one of the most characteristic and lovable among our Christmas popular images. The presence of this uninhibited and controversial figure among the manger figures humanizes the Christmas representation mystery.
The caganer figure, reinterpreted every year in a continuous a repeated way by the handcrafters, is in itself one of the elements that gives personality and identity to our Christmas images so invaded nowadays by a great deal of anglosaxon iconography.
The Residence for Researches CSIC- Generalitat, Government of Catalonia and the Caganer's Friend Association –the latter consisting of scholars, supporters and collectionists of the mentioned figure- moved by their appreciation of popular art and vindicating, at the same time, the cultural particularities and diversities around Christmas celebration, present this small and illustrative exposition on the origin, typology, meaning and so on, of the most popular figure Catalan manger.
