Chemical research, one of the keys to the development and progress of science and technology, and which has a major impact in many different areas of life and society, has been increasingly adapting its objectives to social needs. This has resulted in the progressive emergence of new areas of research that go beyond the classical fields of chemistry. These new areas include biological chemistry, theoretical and computational chemistry, sustainable chemistry and chemical and biomolecular nanotechnology. One of the main keys to the progress of these scientific breakthroughs taking place in the aforementioned fields of research is mutual interaction; thus it is becoming increasingly necessary to create structures that facilitate and encourage this interlocution. That was the reason for the creation, in 2007, of the Instituto de Química Avanzada de Cataluña (Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia) at CSIC (IQAC-CSIC), a body whose main objective is to carry out quality research in basic chemical science, at the same time as it prioritises the solving of specific problems in our society using the interface between different disciplines as its basic tool. Based on a solid tradition of over 70 years of research in fields such as bioorganic, theoretical, technological and environmental chemistry, IQAC-CSIC has become a powerful instrument for innovation and the advancement of knowledge for the purpose of scientific and social advancement.
