The launching of the first Sputnik opened up a new frontier for humanity. Thanks to space probes, man has been able to explore almost all the planets in the solar system, and has broadened the limits of human knowledge to an extraordinary degree. Maintaining a spaceship operative (whether it is a satellite or a probe) under such hostile conditions as those in space represents a technical feat that affects several industrial and technological areas simultaneously.
However, the influence of space activity does not stop there. One frequently-forgotten fact is that the added value of applications on satellites is often far greater than that of the construction of the actual satellite. In this lecture the speaker will describe some of these aspects and their importance in Catalonia.
