Science and the countries of the EU are currently facing a challenge of considerable magnitude: designing the new research and development strategies for the period 2014-2020. Europe’s objective for this time period, in addition to bringing about new achievements in the social sphere, is to ensure that Research & Development & Innovation plays a crucial role in building a continent that is more sustainable, and where levels of well-being and progress become a true point of reference. This importance of the role of Research & Development & Innovation is manifested in the form of the Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (or RIS3 strategies). One of the keystones of these strategies is to try to ensure that the transfer of knowledge from basic and applied research becomes much more active, in such a way that new competitive possibilities are generated by defining the specialisation of different countries and regions in specific areas of activity.
The Residence for Researchers aims to do everything it can to contribute to tackling this challenge by organising a new season of the lecture series "Challenges of the 21st century", in this instance specifically focusing on the close interrelationship that exists between "discovering, innovating and progressing" – a vital factor in the process of constructing a knowledge society capable of facilitating new, fundamental advances in the welfare of citizens, and producing policies that are more sustainable, collaborative and fair.
