Chemistry and illness. Disordered proteins: what are they and what are they used for?

Streaming:http://www.streamingbarcelona.com/plataforma/residenciainvestigadors/

Our bodies are full of machines called proteins. For a long time it was believed that these machines had well-defined structures, and that they functioned like a kind of motor. But recently, proteins have been discovered that have no structure, and which, however, represent a large proportion of our genome. This lecture will explain what proteins are and how they function within our bodies. The speaker will also explain why it is easy to understand that they should be ordered and, therefore, why it is so surprising to find proteins that are disordered. Finally, the speaker will attempt to explain how each of these proteins plays a different role and, thus when they malfunction this can result in specific different illnesses.
