The traces of power: viewed from archaeology and anthropology
Food and, especially, the consumption of meat, have been traditionally used as a symbol of power and social status. One of the elements in the expression of power is people’s capacity to differentiate themselves from the others. Whether it be by amount, or quality, diversity or exclusivity, food has been (and continues to be) a highly important diacritical element. In this lecture, we will be examining different material and documentary evidence to see how the expression of power through food has changed during the course of time, from prehistory to the present day.
