Subordinate immigration, racism and scholastic failure. Young blacks between the periphery of Barcelona and Santo Domingo
This lecture explores the results of a transnational ethnographic study carried out in the marginal neighbourhoods of l’Hospitalet de Llobregat and in poor districts in the capital of Santo Domingo. At a theoretical level, the speaker will examine the link between racism and scholastic failure, a result of the subordinate (migrant) situation that is encouraged by the education system. The speaker will present the material resulting from his ethnographic study on young Dominicans, a study that is multi-situated between the school and the public space, both in the country of origin and the welcoming country.

Cycle: Living, feeling and experiencing: new perspectives in research on young people in the 21st century
